CASSIE KINGSBURY (Cassie-wa)

Former English Major (Read Her Posts)
Contact: cassie.kingsbury [at] bibliomantics [dot] com
Preferred Reading Material: Stuff with teens and magic or ghosts or a dystopian future or something! Occasionally I also read “adult” books. I like books that do neat things with words. I like books that make you laugh, and I like books that stab you in the chest and turn the knife. I especially like books that do both.
Will Not Read
: High fantasy that isn’t Lord of the Rings. (Unless Christopher Paolini ever decides to finish the Inheritance Cycle, in which case I will be forced to read it on principle.)
Favorite Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien, Richard Wright, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, James Joyce, Diana Wynne Jones, Philip Pullman, Neil Gaiman, John Green, Meg Cabot
Favorite Book/Series: Harry Potter
Favorite Literary Character: Lyra Silvertongue, His Dark Materials
Least Favorite Literary Character: Lydia Bennet, Pride and Prejudice
Favorite Book Quote: “I would hurl words into this darkness and wait for an echo, and if an echo sounded, no matter how faintly, I would send other words to tell, to march, to fight, to create a sense of hunger for life that gnaws in us all.” American Hunger, Richard Wright
Favorite Romantic Pairing: Suze/Jesse, The Mediator series

KELLY DURKIN

Former English Major (Read Her Posts)
Contact: kelly.durkin [at] bibliomantics [dot] com
Preferred Reading Material: : I’m a literary omnivore – social satire, young adult literature, memoir/creative nonfiction, fractured fairy tales, poetry, stories of diaspora. Fantasy and magic as long as it’s grounded in humanity. Any words that make me despair that I will ever construct something half so beautiful, but inspire me to try. The occasional mystery novel. Bildungsromans if done right. Nonfiction if I find the subject interesting.
Will Not Read: James Patterson, Nora Roberts, John Grisham etc. Life’s too short to read poorly written and formulaic blockbusters. Charles Dickens. Anything by a Republican.
Favorite Authors: J.K. Rowling, Kurt Vonnegut, Diana Wynne Jones, Neil Gaiman, John Green, Jane Austen, Douglas Adams, Joan Didion, James Joyce, Phillip Pullman, Lorraine Hansberry
Favorite Book/Series: Harry Potter
Favorite Literary Character: Hermione Granger, Harry Potter
Least Favorite Literary Character: Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby
Favorite Book Quote: “Hello, babies.  Welcome to Earth.  It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter.  It’s round and wet and crowded.  At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here.  There’s only one rule that I know of, babies – God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.” God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater by Kurt Vonnegut
Favorite Romantic Pairing: Lyra/Will, His Dark Materials

  1. Nerds! Kidding, well kind of. You are nerds, but in a good way. I’m little sad, I didn’t see a single graphic novel or comic book series on here. I know they have pictures and shit, but Neil Gaimen c’mon!

    • We enjoy comic books and graphic novels, but straight prose has always been nearer and dearer to our hearts, which is why they didn’t make our list of favorites. They are mentioned though, just not specific titles by name. BUT… If I had to pick: “Sandman”, “Watchmen”, “Fables”, “Y: the Last Man” and “Locke & Key” are my tops.

      • Wow, yeah I can’t argue with any of those choices. Y: the Last Man’s Brian K. Vaughn has a new sci-fi series that just started called Saga. If you haven’t heard, it’s fantastic, check it out. I’ll have to go through your guys blog and check out some good books to check out. I have a stack of older stuff that I’m getting through like Lovecraft, Jules Verne, and Hemmingway. I started late in the game as you can tell, so I’m making up for lost time. Cool blog though.

        • I actually review “Saga” for a website called the Daily BLAM!, it’s such an amazing comic. Am loving it so far. Good luck with your reading and book exploration! Verne and Lovecraft are great, but I’m not the biggest Hemmingway fan. =)

          • Yeah I read The Sun Also Rises, and it didn’t really do it for me either. Another author that sort of disappointed me that everyone loves was Kurt Vonnegut. I read Cat’s Cradle, and did not enjoy it. Maybe I’m crazy. And Saga IS awesome! Sorry, I just realized this is you’re guys “about” page i’m taking up bunch of space on. Keep up the good work.
